Destructo and the Holy Ship! crew made their last pitstop in Toronto last Friday leading up to their infamous Holy Ship! cruise February 10-13. Supporting him was Justin Martin, hometown favourite Rezz, and another amazing local Cosella for a sold out show at The Hoxton.
Rezz is taking North America by storm and is already having an impressive 2016. Her set reflects exactly why people enjoy listening to her so much, playing back to back originals like “Lucifer” from her Insurrection EP and a couple new tracks from her latest The Silence is Deafening EP. Of course she also threw down a Zeds Dead track into her set, leading the crowd into a frenzy because Toronto pride, that’s why. There is no stopping her and 2016 will be the year of Rezz.
After, we had Mr. Justin Martin, who absolutely killed it with a unique set you that you don’t hear often in Toronto. Martin played a number of IDs and made me Shazam nearly every song to no avail. The back of the Hoxton was completely filled with shufflers and the music was a reflection of the fantastic mood. At the end of his set we had a special treat from him, playing a world premiere of his unreleased ID that he had been working on for 2 years, being just as amazing as we hoped it was going to be. Big ups to this Dirtybird legend.
Destructo who’s practically accepted as a Canadian now, finished off the show with style. Doing what he does best, switching from Bass House to G-House to Tech House; there was no stopping him from throwing down an amazing set. “Dare You 2 Move”, “Bodyback” and his latest “4 Real” were all big features in his set and one of my favourite tracks currently, “Ain’t Your Girl” by Bixel Boys and Poupon. However, a big highlight of the night was definitely when he played Maddmon‘s remix of “Techno”, giving props to a big Toronto local.
All in all, SHIP2SHIP was what you would expect with filthy beats, constant shuffling and an urge for more. Only if we could all follow them to the cruise.
